Project Overview →
A series of 3D models were made as part of an independent exploration task. This involved developing and conceptualising a 3D character model based on a 2D design, as well as designing and constructing environmental architecture for theoretical video game purposes.

Process 1

For this modelling task, I was tasked with replicating a diorama of a simple building and its immediate surroundings in 3D form through modelling, shading, texturing, and then rendering the model in Unreal Engine 5.

My inspiration for the building was a drawing of a milk carton building by artist Cheryl Young. I analysed and broke down the 2D drawing into simple shapes, which helped me simplify the 3D modelling process. It also helped me work out scale in terms of the different elements in the piece.

Process 2

For this modelling task, I was tasked with designing and creating a 3D character for an existing or theoretical game. I based the design of my character on two monster images. I broke down the components of my design into simple shapes to help with 3D modelling different elements and what the size of each of those should be relative to the overall design. I designed the textures in photoshop.

Process 3

For this modelling task, I was tasked with modelling, shading, lighting and rendering a 3D prop, based off a selection of concept art. The concept art I chose to recreate as a 3D model was a grate design created by Serge Samson for Suricate Games.

I blocked out the basic shapes that made up the design, before adding detail and refining components. I enjoyed the challenge of working out the perspective and proportion of the piece as I only had a three quarter view of the grate. I tried to capture the look of the original concept art as close as possible. Additionally, I found problem solving how to give the sewer grate an infinity like effect very rewarding.
